Focus on Leadership
As an NCAA Division III school, Saint Joseph College hosts eight varsity teams, intramurals, numerous recreation and wellness programs. The College is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).
The O'Connell Athletic Center features a fitness center, indoor track, six-lane pool, gymnasium, dance studio and locker rooms. The Center's outdoor complex includes six tennis courts, an all-weather track and a softball field.
"I know I speak for all the other coaches when I say that our number one priority is on the students' total well being. We understand the demands of college life and we do everything we can to ensure our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in life." ~ Chris LeGates, soccer coach, four-time GNAC Coach of the Year (2003, 2005, 2008, 2010).
The Saint Joseph College Athletic Department has been fully established as an NCAA Division III athletic program since the fall of 1993. The Blue Jays have won GNAC championships in volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. Saint Joseph College also offers varsity programs in soccer, cross country, lacrosse, and swimming & diving.
In 2002, the Saint Joseph College athletic department was the recipient of the USA TODAY/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievement Award for having the highest overall percentage of graduating student-athletes among the nation's Division III institutions.
In keeping with the College's educational and athletic mission statement, all students must be in good academic standing as determined by the College and must also maintain full-time undergraduate status for eligibility on a varsity team. The athletic department at Saint Joseph College complements students' academic experience with a competitive physical regimen. Participation in athletics develops students' leadership skills, strengthens their problem-solving capabilities, and allows them to maintain their physical, mental, and emotional fitness.
Intramural sports consist of: badminton, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, multi-sport club and walking club. Recreational programs include: Holiday Challenge, Cardio Across America, zumba, exercise buddy contest and free weight bursts, providing diverse athletic opportunities to our campus community.
