Suffolk Beats Saint Joseph, 82-67
Boston, Mass. -- Seniors Meghan Black (Roslindale, Mass.) and Mary Garon (Auburn, N.H.) scored 19 points each to lift the Suffolk University Women's Basketball team to an 82-67 victory over Saint Joseph College Saturday in a GNAC game.
Saint Joseph finished 14-10 overall and 6-7 in league play. The loss, coupled with other results from Saturday left the Blue Jays in a five-way tie for the sixth through 10th spots in the final standings. Eight teams qualify for the GNAC tournament and the Blue Jays did not fare well in the tiebreakers, finishing ninth and thus, ending their season.
Saint Joseph sophomore Devon Diliberto (Waterbury, Conn.) led all scorers in the contest with 21 points and freshman Heather Framski (Prospect, Conn.) scored 17 points for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays came back from an early 22-10 deficit and the teams went to the halftime break even at 27 points a piece. But Suffolk broke out with a 13-2 run over the first three minutes of the second half to take a 42-29 lead. The Rams maintained a steady lead largely on the basis of shooting 9 for 11 from three-point range in the second half.
Claire Consonni (Bristol, Conn.) scored 10 for the Blue Jays, all in nine second-half minutes.
Suffolk is 17-8 overall, finished 10-3 in the GNAC and will be the fourth seed in the conference tournament that begins Tuesday.
